Eminescu commemorated 121 years after death

Politicians, writers, artists and ordinary people came together at Mihai Eminescu's bust on the Classical Writers Alley in Chisinau's central garden on June 15 to commiserate the poet 121 years after his death. His bust was covered with flowers. Those attending recited poems written by the bard, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Eminescu said we are not the masters of the language as the language is our master and that we are not the masters of the truth as the truth is our master,” stressed the head of the Witters Union, academician Mihai Cimpoi. Acting President Mihai Ghimpu said he expected that more people will take part in the event. “It's a pity that we are so few today. When the Communists were in power they placed obstacles, but now we enjoy freedom and democracy and the people can come freely to be near the great poet Mihai Eminescu,” Mihai Ghimpu said. He stressed that through his poems, Mihai Eminescu sent his pain and joy as well as the love for the country and people. “We are obliged to honor him.” Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said Mihai Eminescu laid the foundation of our nation and nobody will be able to destroy it. Ghenadie Ciobanu, the head of the Composers Union, said that Mihai Eminescu will always be alive as his works written over 100 years ago are eternal. The head of the European Action Movement Veaceslav Untila said Mihai Eminescu was a philosopher and the people's pride as he always told the truth. On the occasion of the commemoration, a set of notebooks belonging to the poet will be launched at the International Academic Center “Mihai Eminescu”. They contain his poems, novels, dramas and philosophical notes. They also include the poem “Luceafarul” on which Eminescu had worked for over 12 years. Mihai Eminescu was born in Botosani on January 15,1850. During only 17 years, he wrote a large number of poems, dramas, novels, philosophical essays etc. His poems span a large range of themes, from nature and love to hate and social commentary. He frequently used metaphysical, mythological and historical subjects. He died on June 15, 1889 as a result of a heart failure and was buried at Bellu cemetery in Bucharest.
