Gheorghe Ciobanu has been dismissed from the post of director of the Emergency Medicine Institute and Mihai Ciocanu, former deputy health minister, will act as caretaker. This was confirmed to IPN by the Institute's spokesperson Petru Cravet.

In late April, following a formal request by prosecutors, the Ministry of Health decided to suspend 5 out of 16 suspects, including Gheorghe Ciobanu, believed to be involved in fraudulent procurement of health care products.

Gheorghe Ciobanu is investigated without being taken in custody.

Ciobanu had held the post since 1991.
