Embassy of Russia on bomb threat: Serious violation of international obligations

"The authorities Chisinau seriously violated international obligations to comply with the norms of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961. The host state must ensure all the conditions for the performance of diplomatic activity,” the Embassy of Russia in Chisinau says in a press statement, referring to Wednesday's bomb threat at the diplomatic mission, IPN reports.

According to the Embassy, its precincts were blocked for several hours and representatives of the Moldovan law enforcement agencies prevented the Russian ambassador from entering the building, and staff and family members, including women and children, who were inside the Embassy, were denied access to the city. The Embassy itself has not received any official notification from the authorities about the alleged attack.

"In connection with this incident, the Russian Foreign Ministry immediately addressed a note of protest to the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the Russian Federation Lilian Darii, and a request that the provocative blockade of the Russian diplomatic mission in Chisinau be lifted as soon as possible," the Embassy’s statement reads.

The situation was resolved after some time and the cordon around the Embassy was removed. After checking the building, no suspicious or prohibited objects were detected, and measures are currently being taken to identify the caller, the head of the press service of the Chisinau Police Division Natalia Stati told IPN.

Moldova's Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected Russia's accusations that it violated the Vienna Convention, noting that the authorities intervened in accordance with the law and international commitments. Access to the area around the Embassy was temporarily restricted, respecting standard procedures, without affecting the work of the diplomatic mission.

The bomb threat at the Embassy of Russia in Chisinau was recorded at 1:40 p.m. on March 19. Under the law, those who intentionally misinform about an act of terrorism face a fine of up to 42,500 lei, 180 to 240 hours of community service or up to 2 years in prison.
