Embassy of Poland in Chisinau celebrates 226 years of adoption of first Constitution

The 226th anniversary of the adoption of the first Constitution in Europe was marked in Chisinau by a reception hosted by the Embassy of Poland. Ambassador Artur Michalski in the reception said that 226 years ago they laid the basis of the Constitution of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, called officially the Republic of the Two Nations. This is known for the second constitution written in the world, after the American one, and the first in Europe. The document adopted at that time was a forerunning one and this organized and strengthened the state, IPN reports.

“The Constitution teaches us to adjust our own political ambitions for the common good and the future of the motherland because this is the essence of democracy. The Constitution of May 3, 1791 has not only historic significance. Its message is a universal one,” stated Poland’s Ambassador in Chisinau Artur Michalski.

The event formed part of the activities held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Moldovan-Polish diplomatic relations. “From the very beginning of the diplomatic relations, our counties have been very friendly. Poland was, is and will be a good friend of Moldova, which looks for a better future and sees it, as Poland does, in the integration into the harmonious family of free European nations,” stated the Polish diplomat.

On the occasion of the anniversary, Moldova’s Post Office issued a postage stamp and a commemorative stamp with the image of the Royal Castle in Warsaw and the Soroca Fortress. “The cooperation between Poland and Moldova represents not only political support. There are also a series of development projects. When Poland became a member of the European Union, it also became an active partner of Moldova, especially in development projects. During over ten years, Poland has invested over €13 million for the purpose. The cultural relations and the economy also play an important role in the development of the bilateral relations,” said Artur Michalski.

In the same event, the ambassador bid farewell to the Moldovan officials given that he is completing his duties. In June he returns to Warsaw. “I thank my Moldovan friends and the representatives of the world of culture, the mass media, the Church and diaspora. I address a separate word to my colleagues - ambassadors and to the whole diplomatic community. I felt very well with you and thank you for treating me with so much kindness,” he stated.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Lilian Darii said the oldest European constitution is an example for all the European states. “The Constitution is that foundation on which any democratic state is based. The respect for the Constitution brought Poland to the ranks of the developed states from the European continent. I want to express my hope that our bilateral relations will develop by the same ascending path and Moldova will be able to follow Poland’s example and to become a country in the vanguard of the European content,” he stated, thanking the Polish ambassador for the efforts made during his term in Chisinau and assuring that his support was perceptible. He also wished him success in his future professional activity.
