Embargo will not have repercussions expected by Russia, expert

Moldova will be now less affected by the embargo imposed by Russia than in 2006. After that experience, the producers learned the lesson and are now less dependent on the Russian market, economic expert Corina Gaibu stated for IPN.

According to the expert, the immediate decisions required will have a short-term effect, while the producers dependent on the Russian market will have to rapidly reorient their goods to other markets, but also to improve their quality, if necessary.

Corina Gaibu added everyone realizes that Russia’s decision to stop importing Moldovan wines and cognacs is a political one. “I think that what does not kill us makes us stronger. The embargo of 2006 taught us a lesson and now we will easier overcome this stage. The embargo will not have the repercussions expected by Russia,” said the expert.

Independent economic analysts consider that Russia’s embargo is like a cold shower for Moldova, but the country’s economy sometimes needs to be woken up so that it develops continuously.

Russia halted the import of Moldovan wine products, arguing they are of a poor quality and are even dangerous for health. The Moldovan authorities intend to initiate consultations with the Russian side so as to identify a solution.
