Elevators in public hospitals no longer serviceable

The elevators in the national public hospitals are no longer serviceable as their working life of 25 years expired. They often break up, while a part of them do not work because there are no spare parts. According to a report by the Ministry of Health, 10 of the 61 public hospitals were built at the end of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century. “Practically no money has been invested in infrastructure and development over the last 10 years. That’s why the elevators, the electric power and water supply networks are worn-out,” said Minister of Health Andrei Usatyi, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. The quoted report says that 24.6% of the hospitals do not have electric generators as an alternative source of power, while 14.9% have such generators, but they do not work or aren’t connected to the institution’s electric power network. The electric power networks in four hospitals – the Clinical Psychiatry Hospital, the Orhei Psychiatry Hospital, the Municipal Clinical Hospital No. 4 from Chisinau, and the Telenesti District Hospital - need to be renovated almost fully. 37.7% of the hospitals do not have drinking water reserves. Sixteen hospitals are badly in need of repair and about 90% of the heating system networks there must be changed. The state of the roofs of the main buildings of 13 hospitals is unsatisfactory and they need to be extensively repaired. Hospitals’ centralized ventilation and air conditioning systems, built after the 1970s, do not work. The Ministry of Health said money was allocated for modernizing several hospitals, but all the hospitals are planned to be modernized by 2016.
