A sum of 20 million lei is needed to introduce the electronic register of voters. This money will be used to develop the infrastructure in rural areas. The subject was discussed during an international conference themed “New Technologies in Compiling and Using Electoral Rolls. Developments and Prospects,” Info-Prim Neo reports. The president of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Eugeniu Stirbu said the conception of the electronic register of voters was presented in Parliament in 2008. The document says the register must be introduced by 2011. Eugeniu Stirbu said the register will help ensure strict control over the electoral rolls. The implementation of the electronic vote is also being discussed. “Everything depends on the infrastructure that must be created in mayors' offices and settlements. A lot of money needs to be invested. We proposed setting up polling places in schools as they have Internet connection, but we this issue must be discussed thoroughly,” Stirbu said. Prime Minister Vlad Filat said the people must be able to legally elect the power, which should be representative. He stressed that the electoral legislation should be modified by introducing European norms and that the Government will be making effort to create optimal conditions for exercising the right to vote in Moldova. According to him, the electronic register of voters must be available at the next elections already. Moldova's Acting President Mihai Ghimpu said steps will be taken to implement this register. “Such a register must exist as it will help solve many problems,” he said. Mihai Ghimpu also said that the CEC must make effort to restore people's trust in elections. “The compiling of accurate electoral rolls, the exclusion of the dead persons from these lists, the combating of electoral tourism are only some of the objectives that the organizers of the elections must achieve,” he stressed. The project to set up the electronic register is supported by the United Nations Development Program in Moldova.
