Since June 2011, the electrical appliances will be accompanied by labels indicating the energy efficiency class of which they form part, under an EU Directive on Energy Efficiency, Info-Prim Neo reports. “We cannot now say that our energy sector is efficient as the largest part of the equipment dates from the 1970s. That’s why we want the consumers to be informed so that they make a correct choice,” Deputy Minister of Economy Ilarion Popa said in a news conference on Friday. The energy efficiency of the appliance will be rated in terms of a set of energy efficiency classes from A to G on the label, A being the most energy efficient, G the least efficient. “This initiative will allow reducing power consumption by 20% by 2020 as well as the emissions with greenhouse effect,” the deputy minister said. The labels on domestic appliances will be put by the importers. An Energy Protection Agency will be created to make sure that the labels are used correctly. This system aimed at making power consummation more efficient has been used in Europe for 15 years. It enabled reducing power consumption by 5 – 7%. On May 1, 2010, Moldova joined the European Energy Charter Treaty that allows it to implement Europeans energy practices like the use of renewable sources of energy. As a member of the Treaty, Moldova is to fulfill 14 directives by 2017.
