Electoral debates on TRM could be broadcast in sign language

The Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC) recommends the National Public Broadcaster “Teleradio Moldova” to air the main news program on Moldova 1 that starts at 9pm in sign language, as well as the electoral debates within possibilities. The recommendation was made following an application filed by ombudsman Tudor Lazar, Info-Prim Neo reports. The ombudsman considers the persons with hearing impairments are marginalized as regards the access to information, including electoral. Tudor Lazar asked the BCC to oblige the TV channels that broadcast electoral debates to air them in sign language as well. The Council’s members said they do not have legal levers to force the TV channels to do this. Moreover, Moldova faces a shortage of personnel specialized in sign language. BCC member Ludmila Vasilache said the private broadcasters try to ensure access to information for persons with hearing impairments by including subtitles in the news programs. The Council’s chairman Gheorghe Gorincioi stressed at least the electoral debates should be broadcast in sign language.
