The elections to choose deputies on the People’s Assembly of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia set for November 20 will maintain the pro-Russian rhetoric. Even if new faces appear in the nominal composition of the People’s Assembly, no essential changes at political level are likely in the region, Mihail Sirkeli, director of the Association “Piligrim-Demo”, stated for IPN.
According to Mihail Sirkeli, the candidates for deputy on the People’s Assembly do not center on debates designed to improve the life of each citizen in Gagauzia and do not address the internal problems of the region, but lay emphasis on politics and geopolitics.
“There are a multitude of problems faced in the region such as undeveloped areas, waste stored in unauthorized places, roads of a poor quality and non-renovated hospitals. Regretfully, these problems are not discussed,” stated the analyst.
Mihail Sirkeli noted that some of the candidates for deputy could use the campaign that will precede the presidential elections to promote themselves at local level. The aspirants for the office of President could also use the campaign in Gagauzia to build their image.
The campaign prior to the elections in Gagauzia starts officially 60 days before the election day, which is on September 20.
The People’s Assembly of Gagauzia consists of 35 deputies elected for a four-year term in uninominal territorial districts by universal, equal, direct, secret and freely expressed vote.
