Election runners’ obligation to suspend their main job activities for the campaign period is abusive - AMN

“Moldova Noastra” Alliance (AMN) regards as abusive the Central Election Commission’s decision that establishes categories of persons who are obliged to suspend their main job activities for the campaign period if they are running in elections, reads a statement by the Alliance, presented Friday in the Parliament’s plenum. CEC demanded that the main job activities be suspended by Government members, heads of central public authorities, raion chairpersons and their deputies, mayors and deputy mayors taking part in the election campaign. AMN party considers that these categories should have been listed in the electoral legislation, mentioning that by acting so, CEC exceeded its authorities, therefore its actions are devoid of legal grounds. Mayors and vice mayors, raion chairpersons and their deputies fall under the force of the Law on local deputies, which stipulates that their mandates are valid continuously until the expiry date. According to the statement’s authors, by obliging these categories to step down, CEC has violated the rights of the 2007 electoral candidates, as they are being discriminated compared with other categories of civil servants. “Moldova Noastra” thinks that by interpreting superficially the Electoral Code and adopting certain non-qualitative regulations, the Central Election Commission, whether willingly of unwillingly, has created favourable conditions to the ruling party of communists.
