Elderly men perish in house fires

Two persons older than 80 lost their lives in home fires. One of them was found charred, and the other one got poisoned by flue gases, IPN reports.

A house in Arionești village of Dondușeni district caught fire on the morning of December 26. Firefighters found an 89-year-old man charred in one of the rooms. The stove's door was completely open and the fire most probably started from a spark.

The second man, aged 84, also met his end in the house. Firefighters were called out to Pîrîta village of Dubăsari district, where the attic of a residential building was burning. The body of the man was found in one of the rooms. As he did not have burns, firefighters presume that he died poisoned by carbon monoxide coming from the chimney flue.

Expert examinations were ordered in both cases.

People who heat their homes with wood are warned to systematically clean the ventilation ducts. At night, the fire in the stove must be put out. During the day, the rooms should be ventilated. Villagers are urged to offer support to lonely people who live nearby - to help them light the fire, but also to remind them how to protect themselves from fires.

According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Stations, 103 people, three of whom were minors, died in the 1,639 fires that occurred in Moldova so far this year.
