Eight modern mobile labs donated to Forensic Center of General Police Inspectorate

The Forensic and Judicial Expertise Center of the General Police Inspectorate received eight mobile labs outfitted with modern investigation equipment. The equipment to the value of about US$720,000 was purchased with the assistance of the U.S. Government within the Support to Police Reform in the Republic of Moldova Project that is implemented by UNDP, IPN reports.

The donation consists of three mobile labs with forensic supplies and other instruments for on-the spot-examination, including for identifying and collecting evidence at the crime scene, and five automobiles for investigating medium-gravity crimes. In the handover event, forensic experts provided a demonstration of the new technical capacities for identifying biological, digital, DNA, transport and other kinds of trails.

Attending the event, Prime Minister Pavel Filip said these labs will contribute to strengthening the police’s capacity for swifter discovering offenders. “Besides the capacities that the personnel of the bodies of the Ministry of the Interior have, these should be also outfitted with the necessary instruments. These mobile labs will help the police employees increase their examination capacities,” he stated.

Minister of the Interior Alexadru Jizdan said that during almost three years, the police in Moldova have undergone a continuous reformation and modernization process. “This equipment will enable us to be more efficient and exact when investigating different types of crimes and to ensure a higher crime discovery rate,” he said.

U.S. Ambassador in Chisinau James Pettit said the U.S Government has supported the Forensic Center of Moldova since 2006 with the aim of promoting the justice sector reform and its implementation. This project will help the forensic subdivisions of Moldova to develop their capacities.

The U.S. Government also helped renovate and equip two halls of the Forensic and Judicial Expertise Center, where there will be staged conferences, training seminars and other events intended for specialists. Within the same project, the Center received special tools and equipment for the bomb squad.
