The Education and Science Trade Union threatens to stage mass protests if the authorities do not increase teachers’ salaries. The Union’s General Council requested the Government to raise the salaries in education by 50%, IPN reports.
“From November 2013, we have submitted proposals for increasing the salaries in education to the Government, but there has been no reaction so far. We will try to hold negotiations with the Government until April 2. If our demands are not satisfied, we will mount large-scale protests,” the Trade Union’s head Dumitru Ivanov said in a meeting of the General Council on March 5.
Teachers from the country’s districts attending the meeting said they will protest until they achieve the expected result.
In 2000, teachers’ salaries were increased by 50%, while in 2002 – by 60%. Currently, the minimum salary of a teacher is 2,200 lei.
