Editorialist Constantin Tanase passed away

The founder of the newspaperTimpul”, newspaperman and writer Constantin Tanase died today, October 30, at the age of 65, the paper’s editorial staff announced.

Constantin Tanase was born on June 24, 1949 in Nemteni village of Hancesti district. After graduating from the secondary school, he enrolled at the Romanian Language Faculty of the Chisinau University “Ion Creanga”. Later he worked as a teacher and as director for education. He studied for his doctorate at the Academy of Sciences and became a Doctor of Philology.

In 1988-1990, he worked as the scientific secretary of the terminology commission of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. In 1991-1993, he served as a member of Moldova’s first Parliament, while in 1994-1996 – as director of the National Terminology Center. Constantin Tanase initiated and implemented a wide program to print terminology dictionaries. In 1996, he worked as adviser to President Mircea Snegur, while in 1997-2001 – as deputy editor-in-chief, editor-in-chief and director of the newspaper “Flux”.

In September 2001, he launched the National Independent Daily “Timpul”. He published the publicistic volumes “Aesop’s Eye” (2000), “Motherland booming” (2001), “Thieves of myths” (2004), “Curse of being” (2009), and “Hole with lions” (2014).

Constantin Tanase was awarded the medals “Civic Merit” and “Mihai Eminescu”, and the Order of the Republic. In 2004 he was conferred the National Order “Romania’s Star” in the rank of Commander, while in 2014 – the National Order “Faithful Service” in the rank of Major Officer.

He is a laureate of the National Journalism Award.

On June 12, Constantin Tanase launched in Bucharest his most recent book “Hole with lions”, while on June 15 he presented this volume in the Spanish town Altea, at the invitation of Moldovans living there.
