Edinet prosecutor arrested on passive corruption charges

A prosecutor from Edinet was arrested on passive corruption charges. He is suspected of asking for 20,000 lei for dropping the criminal case started against a person over the theft of a mobile phone, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, legal action against the prosecutor was taken by the prosecutor general a month ago, following the giving of information to the police by an informer. It was established that the prosecutor received the money in three tranches. He was arrested immediately after he got the last tranche. The money was found in the prosecutor’s car.

The prosecutor was placed under arrest for 72 hours. The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office will soon issue the indictment. The suspect is 42 and has worked in the prosecution service since 1998. He faces 7 to 15 years behind bars and a fine of 400,000 to 500,000 lei, with ban on holding particular posts or performing particular activities for 10 to 15 years.
