Economic situation in Transnistria has worsened, official

The economic situation in the Transnistrian region has worsened. Most of the economic parameters show production decreased, the salaries are not paid on time and Russia transfers the financial assistance with delay, head of the Reintegration Office George Balan said in an interview for Radio Free Europe, IPN reports.

“But we lately received information that Russia renewed the transfers and the pensioners will receive the bonuses to pensions. The fact that the region accepts money from abroad confirms that Transnistria is not self-sufficient. It can survive and exist greatly owing to this money,” stated George Balan.

He denied the accusations made by Tiraspol against Chisinau and the EU, that the crisis in the region is due to the economic blockade generated by the signing of the Association Agreement. “These accusations are incoherent and based on no real figures. The political statements about the supposed blockade imposed on Transnistria by Ukraine or Moldova are refuted by the statistics that came directly from the region,” said George Balan.

The head of the Reintegration Office also said that the Transnistrian economic entities fully benefited from the commercial preferences enjoyed by Moldova as a result of the cooperation with the European Union.
