The economic situation in the Transnistrian region is difficult in a number of sectors and can run out of control. Inflation there is higher than everywhere else in Moldova. Economic expert Viorel Chivriga has told IPN that the economy on the left bank of the Nistru develops chaotically and the economic problems become more visible, but haven’t yet reached a critical stage.

“In 2012, the Gross Regional Product was about 4%. The region’s population continues to diminish. There are problems related to investments, while the construction sector is in decline. The situation in agriculture is worrying, while the vegetal sector contracted almost twice,” stated Viorel Chivriga.

As to the economic entities, the expert stated that there are few large businesses on the left bank of the Nistru. “The economic situation in the region can get out of control. The officials there realize it and speak about this themselves. The situation is worrisome. The Transnistrians are also not sure that 2013 will be a good year,” said Viorel Chivriga.

Recently, Mihail Burla, leader of “Obnovlenie” Party and chairman of the Transnistrian Supreme Soviet, said the economy declined in 2012, more people emigrated compared with 2011,the number of working people decreased, while he negative trend continues this year too.

Mihail Burla underlined that until recently the ratio of employees to pensioners was 1:1. But now there are more elderly persons whom those who work must maintain. The reason is the more accentuated migration of persons of working age. The economy is also affected by the fact that the metallurgical plant and the cement plant stopped work.

According to a study carried out among Transnistrian economic entities, 42% of them expect that the situation in business will worsen, while slightly over 23% are more optimistic and expect that the economic situation will improve. But their optimism is related to the possible assistance that the region’s administration will provide.
