President of the Territorial Organization of Chisinau of the Ecologic Movement of Moldova, Vladimir Garaba, claims that the smoke of burning leafs is one of the biggest sources of pollution. The leafage is burnt in people’s backyards or on the territories of different companies. According to Garaba, approximately a thousand tons of leafs are evacuated from Chisinau every autumn. The leader of the Chisinau ecologists claims that the evacuation of such a great amount of leafs could be controlled by a project, financed by the ecological and republican Funds. Until now, the leafs were simply deposited in the „Purcel” quarry. Ecologists are in the favor of ecological deposits according to a special technology, with the ulterior reuse of leafs as fertilizers for agricultural terrains. A meeting on this topic was held on Thursday, September 28, in the Chisinau City Hall. The interim mayor, Vasile Ursu, declared that Chisinau City Hall supports the elaboration of leafage evacuation project, but the local authorities will not be able to offer financial support in the matter. The City Hall requests support from the Ecologic Fund, which allocated approximately MDL 1.7 million for cleaning works. According to Ursu, the municipality needs an equivalent amount for this autumn. In the regional offices of the City Hall a telephone lines will be created, that will allow citizens to report cases of leafage burning. Ecologists suggested the active involvement of police forces so that persons that burn leafs in their backyardsare fined.
