Ecolabel for products and services with reduced impact on environment

The products and services with a reduced impact on the environment will be marked with an ecolabel to inform consumers about their quality. The Cabinet on Wednesday approved the regulations on ecolabeling, which stipulate the criteria for providing the label and the procedure for monitoring products and services with ecolabels, IPN reports.

The Ministry of Environment, which will manage the ecolabel, will empower certification organisms with the right to authorize operators to use the ecolabel. The goal of the measure is to ensure fair competition, to maintain and justify consumers’ confidence in products and services with ecolabels and to reduce the negative impact of consumption and production on the environment, health, climate and natural resources,” said Minister of Environment Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov.

The regulations cover 11 categories of products and services proven to be environmentally preferable, such as paints and dyes, electronic and gardening equipment, personal and animal care products, furniture, clothing, etc. The ecolabel will not be paced on medicines intended for human and animal use, foods and fodder, products that contain toxic substances dangerous for the environment, etc.

The regulations were worked out by the Ministry of Environment with the support of the EU-funded EU4Environment Program intended for the Eastern Partnership countries (UNEP/AO EcoContact).
