ECHR to examine case on inhuman detention conditions in Transnistria

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) communicated the case of Russian citizen Vadim Pogorletski, who is held in Hlinaia village in the Transnistrian region in inhuman conditions, to the Governments of Moldova and Russia, said Promo-LEX Association, whose jurists will represent the plaintiff in the ECHR, IPN reports.

According to Promo-LEX, in 2000-2008 Vadim Pogorletski worked as the administrator of a number of social-political publications in Transnistria, such as “Dnestrovskii Curier”, “Ruskii Rubej”, and “Ruskii Proriv”. Most of the articles published in these newspapers were political in character and critical of the Transnistrian regime. On May 3, 2010, Vadim Pogorletski was stopped by representatives of the so-called customs service of the region at the Pervomaisk border crossing point. He was taken to the basement of a jail in Tiraspol, where he was held in inhuman conditions. In April 2012, he was sentenced to seven years in prison.

The man complained to the ECHR, invoking violations of the rights stipulated in Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights as he has been illegally held for a long period, in anti-sanitary conditions, and hasn’t been provided medical assistance while under arrest. He also invoked the violation of provisions of Article 5 of the Convention because he was arrested by persons who do not have such a power and has been in detention without a legal reason, by order of an illegal court.
