ECHR decisions can stop Transnistrian regime from violating human rights, Promo-Lex

“The decisions of the European Court of Human Rights can somehow prevent the Transnistrian administration from massively violating the human rights in the region. The Court is one of the few credible institutions in the region and we hope that its credibility will increase,” president of Promo-Lex Association Ion Manole stated for Info-Prim Neo. Promo-Lex filed dozens of suits against Tiraspol to the ECHR. Many of them refer to the Romanian language schools, the Bender and Grigoriopol high schools and the Bender orphanage. “We asked examining some of the cases as matters of urgency. However, the decisions are passed with delay. The cases were lodged in 2004,” said Ion Manole, adding that the examination of the cases takes time as the problems are complex. The president of Promo-Lex stressed that the ECHR’s decisions have a positive impact. In at least three of the tried cases, the persons have been set free. “Immediately after Russia and Moldova were notified of the decisions, the given persons were released. This was impossible earlier,” said Ion Manole. According to him, Ilie Cazac and Ernest Vardanyan, who were convicted of espionage for Moldova and state treason, may be set free only with the help of the ECHR.
