Ecaterina Mardarovici: It’s time for women to become more active in politics. ELECTIONS 2015

Ecaterina Mardarovici, executive director of the Women’s Political Club 50/50, said it’s time for the women to become more active and to engage in politics more determinedly. It’s time for the voters to exert pressure on the political parties so that these ensure a minimum women representation quota of 30% or 40% on their lists of candidates. In a news conference at IPN, Ecaterina Mardarovici noted she launched a campaign to inform the women from disadvantaged groups how to address election contenders and what questions to put to them.

The director of the Women’s Political Club 50/50 said the ruling parties and the opposition ones that declare themselves pro-European violate the European provisions concerning the women’s representation in politics. Last year, Parliament passed the bill on the women’s representation in the first reading, but this bill wasn’t adopted in the final reading yet.

Civil society insisted that the parties should be funded from the state budget only if they promote women and young people on their lists of candidates, but the lawmakers removed this provision from the bill.

Ecaterina Mardarovici said the parties have enough women whom to promote and to include on the lists of candidate because statistics show that 45% to 56% of the members of the Moldovan parties are women.

Alexei Buzu, director of the Partnership for Development Center, said the poor representation of women in the executive bodies leads to the poor promotion of the interests of all the people.
