EBRD suggests proposals for financing water supply projects

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is ready to finance a number of water supply projects in northern and southern Moldova.

According g to a communique of the Ministry of the Environment, quoted by IPN, the beneficiaries of the water supply project in northern Moldova will include the towns Soroca, Balti, Floresti, Drochia, Rascani, Sangerei and Telenesti, who will take part in the creation of an association for developing water supply and sewerage services. The general objective of the project is to modernize the existent aqueduct Soroca-Balti. For the purpose, the EBRD will provide a loan of €10 million, while another €10 million will be offered by the EIB.  Creating a regional operator that will manage the system is a condition for releasing the financing.

The Leova-Cimislia-Basarabeasca-Ceadir Lunga water main could be built in southern Moldova to supply water to about 100,000 residents. After examining the possibility of investing in this project, the EBRD contracted the consultancy company BDO to make a pre-feasibility study that showed that investments of €15 million are needed in this project. To implement the project, the Ministry of the Environment will hold negotiations with the EBRD and other potential donors.

The EBRD also expressed interest in the needs to build water treatment stations at 36 wine factories and in settlements with a population of over 2,000 people and to construct and reconstruct levees and drainage channels.

Since 1991, the EBRD financing for Moldova rose to €1.65 billion.
