Representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and mayor general of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca signed an agreement of intent concerning the financing of a solid waste sorting project in the municipality of Chisinau in 2016 – 2020, IPN reports.

A loan of €10 million is needed for implementing this project. The loan will be repaid at an interest rate of 5 – 6%. But the municipality will also be able to get a grant of €5 million. According to Dorin Chirtoaca, the loan is provided with a grant component and this diminishes the interest rate to about 1%. Such conditions are favorable for implementing the solid waste sorting project.

The reorganization of the whole waste sorting service implies the modernization of the machinery of the cleanup company “Autosalubritate”, the purchase of plastic, metal, paper and glass waste containers, the building of a waste sorting plant and the transformation of the organic mass into compost. The waste dump in Tantareni village is to be modernized by erecting a levigate (liquid pollutant resulting from waste) treatment station.
