EBRD allocates €3m for rehabilitating thermoelectric system in Balti

The thermoelectric system in Balti municipality will be rehabilitated with a grant of €3 million provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The Government on May 25 approved the grant agreement between the Republic of Moldova, SA CET-Nord and EBRD for financing the project to rehabilitate the thermoelectric system, IPN reports.

According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Octavian Calmac, the project is aimed at optimizing the thermal and electricity system in Balti municipality. The grant will be allocated from the funds of the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P).

The thermoelectric plant that works based on coal will be modernized and will work based on biofuel. There will be installed three gas engines with the capacity of 4.4 MW each for the simultaneous generation of heat and electricity. The network pumps will be replaced and 169 individual thermal units will be set up inside apartment buildings.

If the project is implemented, about 100,000 consumers in Balti municipality will benefit from heat at accessible tariffs and from a cleaner environment, with minimal CO2 emissions and emissions of other greenhouse gases.

The trilateral agreement was signed on April 1 this year.
