Earth Hour observed in Moldova and worldwide

Earth Hour is observed today, March 26, in Chisinau and the whole country. Vadim Sochirca, spokesperson of the Ministry of Environment, told Info-Prim Neo that today’s event has more of an educational role, of raising people’s awareness about the need to save electricity. “We want at least to try to convince people switch off devices and electronics for an hour. Not only will it save energy, but will make the air cleaner and the Earth will get to rest for a few minutes”, he says. He mentioned that the event addressed to both consumers and companies. “We know it’s nearly impossible for companies to shut down all the devices and equipments, but they could try to save some electricity for an hour. That doesn’t mean someone will be deprived of electricity supply. No. Earth Hour is a symbolic action meant to help the protection of environment and fight climate change. Worldwide, lights will be switched off in institutions, companies, apartments, public places, and we want the same to happen in Chisinau and the whole country”, said Sochirca. The ecologic event Earth Hour will take place between 8.30-9.30 PM. The organizers will celebrate the action with a concert in the Dendrarium Park, in the light of candles. The event includes drums and guitar performances, a fire-show and graffiti contests. If all domestic consumers in Moldova gave up electricity for an hour, they would save 278000 KW. To obtain this energy, 86,800 cube meters of gas are consumed, which produces 165 tonnes of greenhouse gases. In 2007, Earth Hour was held in only one city- Sydney, Australia. In 2009 and 2010, it was held in about 1000 cities, including Chisinau.
