“Earth Day is an opportunity to unite our efforts to save nature, to adopt lifestyles that preserve the national treasure that is our soil. It must be defended from enemies from outside, who can threaten the security of our country, but it must also be defended from within, from the reckless actions of those who can pollute and degrade it”, declared Environment Minister Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov in a message marking Earth Day on April 22.
According to the minister, the lifestyles adopted by many people lately has proven to be “reckless, harmful to nature”.
“The economic and social realities show more and more clearly that the way that our natural resources have been exploited risks calling into question the ability of the Earth to ensure the survival of future generations. The unbalanced way of using natural resources has produced irreversible changes in the delicate balance that ensures life on earth. As a result of this depletion, efforts to improve living conditions in areas affected by poverty and disease could be compromised”, stated Iordanov.
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22. This year’s theme is “Invest in Our planet”.
In Moldova, Earth Day has been celebrated since 1990. The actions that have been carried out on this occasion so far have focused on sanitation activities, planting, landscaping, ecological classes held in the country’s schools, information activities. Earth Day aims to draw attention to environmental degradation, the effects of pollution, and to initiate action that each of us can take to help conserve nature.
