Each second Moldovan is overheavy or obese. In the Republic of Moldova, the number of obese and overheavy persons is higher in urban areas than in rural ones and this phenomenon prevails among women, IPN reports.

The data were provided by the National Public Health Center in connection with the European Obesity Days that are held during May 10-20. According to the Center, obesity increases proportionally to age, from 1% in the 18-24 age bracket to 25% in the 45-65 age bracket, and then decreases.

The sedentary way of life is typical for almost 60% of the people older than 15. According to specialists, low consumption of fruit and vegetables is another cause of obesity. 66.6% of the people in Moldova eat less than five snacks of fruit and vegetables a day.
