The passing away of poet Dumitru Matcovschi is an immeasurable loss for the Bessarabian people. It leaves an enormous gap in our literature and history because Dumitru Matcovschi was not only a poet, dramatist and prose writer, but also a fortress man and an emblematic figure for the National Renaissance Movement in Bessarabia, said the president of the Writers Union of Moldova Arcadie Suceveanu, quoted by IPN.
Arcadie Suceveanu stated that Dumitru Matcovschi will remain in the people’s memory as a poet who wrote very beautiful poems about the maternal feeling and the beauty of the Romanian language. He will be also remembered as a poet who condemned imposture and lies about the life in Bessarabia along history.
The president of the Writers Union also said that Dumitru Matcovschi assumed Bessarabia’s destiny and identified himself with the history and tragedy of this people. Matcovschi’s poems were created from the tears of Bessarabia. The poet will remain in history as a symbol of courage and dignity and as a promoter of the cleanest and highest national ideals.
Dumitru Matcovschi passed away in the evening of June 26 at the age of 73. Over the last few weeks, he had stayed in the hospital after undergoing surgery on the brain.
