Dumitru Matcovschi receives decoration awarded by Traian Basescu

Romanian poet Dumitru Matcovschi was decorated with the order of “The Cultural Merit” in the rank of Grand Officer. The distinction was awarded in Chisinau on Wednesday, April 25, on a decree signed by Romanian President Traian Basescu, Info-Prim Neo reports. The order was handed to the poet by the State Secretary for Romanians Everywhere, Eugen Tomac. “Seeking to reward Dumitru Matcovschi, poet and member of the Moldovan Academy of Science; for his efforts and as a sign of great appreciation for the perseverance and abnegation which he used to promote Romania's national and cultural values, fighting in the defense of the abroad Romanian communities' rights, the Romanian President awards the order of “The Cultural Merit”, in the rank of Grand Officer, class A.” said Eugen Tomac. In his speech, Dumitru Matcovschi said that the Basarabian national rebirth began in '69. “Back then, they arrested our books, searched our apartments, denied us, called us names, banished us from the city”, said the poet. Dumitru Matcovschi has also complained about the certain people's treason of the national interest for which they formerly stood for. “I can't rejoice like everyone else, because even though today is a special day, it will soon pass and there will be war again, and the people will be struck by grief once more. Like everyone of you, I am not made of iron, nor stone, the chaos will continues, the daily routine is exhausting, and we are cut from the same dough. Alter ego is merciless, indifferent and cold to all of the heinous acts of the wag ones among us. I can't understand where all of the recent martyrs and famous personalities came from in recent years”, the poet said. Dumitru Matcovschi praised the Romanian President for being “a man of great courage, a fighter, a symbol, a messenger of great ideals”. “Unfortunately, neither the present or the former Presidents of Moldova are like him”, the poet said. Dumitru Matcovschi was congratulated at the event by the capital's mayor, Dorin Chirtoaca; the president of the Moldovan Academy of Science, Gheorghe Duca; the president of the Liberal Party, Mihai Ghimpu; and Cristofor Aldea Teodorovici sang two of his late father's songs, Ion Aldea Teodorovici, whose lyrics were written by Matcovschi himself. Dumitru Matcovschi was born on 20 October 1939 in Vadul-Rascov village, Soroca.
