A musical performance, where Dumitru Matcovschi’s works have been sung and recited, has been held at the National Library today, October 17. The action took place in the context of a series of activities entitled "Dumitru Matcovschi – Bessarabia’s tears of yearning", IPN reports.
According to Elena Pintilei, director of the National Library, Dumitru Matcovschi's works are valued in the Bessarabian space and abroad and are studied in schools and universities. "The events represent a method of capitalizing on the national heritage. Dumitru Matcovschi plays a special role in the Romanian literature,” said the director.
Today, a book exhibition that reflects the poet's entire career, including works of literary criticism, has been inaugurated. Rita Negru-Vodă, director of "Dumitru Matcovschi" Gymnasium in Vadul-Rascov, the writer's homeland, says she met Dumitru Matcovschi as a fourth grader, when he, together with the poet Grigore Vieru, attended an event in the village. The teacher believes that "it is a shame not to honour such a talent like Dumitru Matcovschi, perhaps even more than it is done today". "There should be schools, theatres, libraries, museums bearing the name of Dumitru Matcovschi. This I think is our main duty towards our great forerunner,” said Rita Negru-Voda.
Ionela Crăciun, a student in the 7th grade at "Dumitru Matcovschi" Gymnasium in Chisinau, says that the institution where she studies highly appreciates Dumitru Matcovschi. Many of the poet's poems have been turned into lyrics for songs which became hits. Her favourite songs on Dumitru Matcovschi's lyrics are "A Mother's Heart" and "Rejoice!".
Dumitru Matcovschi’s works can be found in more than 250 publications and periodicals at the National Library.
