The president of honor of the Democratic Party Dumitru Diacov said he cannot answer for all the MPs as to the chance of amending Article 13 of the Constitution, but personally considers that Romanian has been the official language of the Republic of Moldova since 1994 and this should be stipulated in the Constitution. In an interview for Radio Free Europe’s Service in Moldova, the MP said there are different opinions on the issue inside the Democratic Party, IPN reports.
“Society is divided on the issue. Some consider the Moldovan language is the official language, while others consider it is the Romanian language. I think “the Romanian language” should have been specified long ago. The citizens of the Republic of Moldova speak Romanian, as the Austrians speak German and half of Africa speaks French, Portuguese, Spanish or another language, but the countries are different. The people in Switzerland speak Italian and German, but are Swiss. It is a matter that necessitates time to be apprehended,” stated Dumitru Diacov.
According to him, when there is a majority that will support the idea, this will be implemented. “The state must do everything possible for the Romanian language to be studied all over the Republic of Moldova and in compact areas were national minorities live as we produce opposition over this issue too. If a child finishes school and does not know the official language, initially this is a school problem, but it later turns into a social, political problem,” noted the MP.
Asked in another development how the future Parliament will look like if 51 MPs come from single-member constituencies and 50 are elected based on party lists, Dumitru Diacov said it will be harder to work on the future legislature than at present as it is not known who the 51 MPs will be and, first and foremost, there will be no party monopoly. The parties will have to discuss and negotiate.
As to the relationship between the Government and the Presidential Office, the MP said the Government should take a step, but the President should also take a step forward so that they come to terms. “We are for the Europeans integration. They followed another direction. The President, in the conditions of the Republic of Moldova, should be a balancing factor,” noted the Democrat. He added that the President should be a moderator and should distance himself from the party that fielded him.
