Dumitru Diacov: Constitution must strengthen country, not divide it

The president of honor of the Democratic Party Dumitru Diacov said that if a new Constitution is adopted, it should strengthen the country, not split it. The supreme law must be devised by experts from different areas, not only one parliamentary group. “The parties should sit at the negotiating table. It is not enough for a parliamentary group to draft a Constitution. The election threshold can be reduced this year. As to the election of the head of state, there is this populist issue concerning the people’s will. We need a parliamentary regime,” Dumitru Diacov said in Pro TV Chisinau’s program “In profunzime”, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. Lib-Dem Tudor Deliu said the Liberal-Democratic Party (PLDM) accepts the idea of a new Constitution, but it should be discussed. “I do not say that the Liberal Party’s bill is not good as it was designed by experts, but it should be the result of common work,” he stated. The Liberal Party (PL) earlier proposed a new Constitution that was drafted by the constitutional reform commission. The bill provides for the election of the head of state by popular vote. “But this will happen later as this autumn the President should be elected in Parliament,” said the party’s leader Mihai Ghimpu. In reaction to the PL’s initiative, heavyweights of the PLDM announced that a constitutional reform aimed at adopting a new Constitution by a referendum centering on the method of electing the head of state can be implemented only after next September.
