The Social-Democrat leader Dumitru Braghis says the position of President of Moldova should be removed. He considers that if the Constitution is amended and the powers of the head of state are transferred to other important state bodies, the political crisis will be overcome. Dumitru Braghis made related statements during a news conference on February 15, Info-Prim Neo reports. The leader of the Social Democratic Party said the presidency is a permanent source of instability. “The political crisis is due to the non-election of the head of state. This is not for the first time that a crisis arises because of this. Moreover, after the post of President was instituted in Moldova, the state powers began to disagree,” Braghis said. Braghis said that in order to overcome the crisis situation, chapter five of title three of the Constitution of Moldova “Moldova's President” should be removed. “The functions of the head of state can be transferred to the Parliament, the Government, the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Council of Magistrates and other state institutions. Large amounts of public money will be thus saved and could be used to solve social problems,” he said. According to him, the Constitution should be amended by referendum, while the modifications should take effect after the early elections. Braghis also said that so as to ensure the real independence of all the powers in the state, most of the members of the Parliament, the Constitutional Court, the Audit Office and the Broadcasting Coordination Council, the district heads and the representatives in the Supreme Council of Magistrates must be elected directly, by constituencies. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, the Parliament's press service said the Head of Parliament Mihai Ghimpu, who is also Moldova's Acting President, considers that Dumitru Braghis studied only the social basis of the problem, not yet the legal one.
