MP Dumitru Alaiba (ACUM/PAS) suggests that the definitive repeal of the citizenship by investment law should be discussed at the next meeting of the Supreme Security Council, set for Wednesday by President Igor Dodon. The MP has prepared an initiative in this regard, which he will submit to Igor Dodon, first thing on Tuesday, IPN reports.

“I respectfully and strongly request to urgently include in the agenda an additional topic, namely the immediate repeal of the citizenship by investment law. This topic was previously discussed at the Supreme Security Council, and on June 18, 2019, PSRM and ACUM lawmakers jointly voted to repeal the law upon first reading. Consequently, this program was suspended for a period of four months, but not permanently annulled”, says Dumitru Alaiba’s request, which was published on Facebook.

According to the MP, given that the moratorium on this law has expired, “it is of major importance to make it an urgent priority to repeal this law upon second reading, even at the next sitting of Parliament. The citizenship by investment law poses serious national security risks and potentially facilitates money laundering in our country. This was true in June 2019 and remains true today. I really hope that the new political cooperation between two Parliament parties, PDM and PSRM, does not reflect negatively on the commitments which you undertook, among others, a few months ago, actions that I still consider to be in the interests of the citizens,” says the initiative.

Dumitru Alaiba said he will send a copy to Speaker Zinaida Greceanîi.

In November 2018 the Moldovan Parliament adopted the citizenship by investment program, a scheme for granting citizenship in exchange for payments of 100,000 euros made to the state budget for sustainable development purposes. On July 31, 2019, Parliament set up a four-month moratorium on receiving any new applications under the program.
