DSP ex-chair becomes member of Democrat Party

The well-known political analyst in Moldova Oazu Nantoi, former chair of the Democrat Social Party (PSDM), became the member of the Democrat Party (DP). This was made public at a news conference held by DP on Wednesday, March 14. Nantoi stated that after a two-year political quarantine, being deeply dissatisfied with what has been happening in Moldova, he decided to turn to good account his potential as an expert and social-democrat, returning to the active political life as a DP member. He explained his option for this party by the fact that “the atmosphere in DP is more social-democrat than in PSDM”. When asked if he is going to run for certain positions in the local elections, Nantoi said that as a resident of the city, he realises that a lot problems are still unsolved, including because “the municipal administration has been feverish for more than one year”, that is why he will actively participate in the elections, either sharing his experience or running on the lists. Two former members of PSDM from Balti have attended the conference as well. Vlad Ghitu, one of the former leaders of Balti branch, stated that several persons left this party, while the others joined DP, which has the same doctrine, but “is a more serious party, with a larger human potential and political ambitions, while PSDM looks more and more like an Ltd.”. DP leader Dumitru Diacov said that soon the party will present the mayors who have recently joined it. When requested about a possible unification of the social-democratic parties, Diacov stated it doesn’t make sense that electors in Moldova support three social-democratic parties. “It would be better to be only one, and DP will do its best to merge these parties”, Diacov said, trusting that discussions related to this item will be relaunched after the elections. Oazu Nantoi is renowned in Chisinau as a political analyst and especially as an expert in the Transnistrian issue. He is one of the founders of PSDM, which he chaired until 2004, when Ion Musuc was appointed as the chairman of the party. Nantoi headed the Political Analysis Division under the first president of Moldova, then a division of the Interdepartmental Commission for Coordinating State Policies in the settlements situated on the left bank of Nistru River. In 2000, he became the Programme Director in the conflicts management at the Public Policy Institute.
