The 29-year-old inebriated driver who caused a road accident that resulted in three deaths in Piatra commune of Orhei district was sentenced to eight years in jail and banned from driving. One of the victims was the local mayor, IPN reports.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the driver was also obliged to play half a million lei damages to the successors of the injured parties and 12,000 lei court costs.
The accident happened on July 18 this year. The heavily inebriated driver was traveling on the main street of Piatra when, trying illegally to overtake a car, he mounted the sidewalk and struck four pedestrians. Three of the victims died, while the fourth suffered serious injuries and remained confined to bed.
Immediately after the accident, the driver was arrested and remanded in custody. The sentence can be appealed to a higher court.
