Drought forecasted for next summer

The specialists consider as “catastrophic” this year’s drought. As of September last year, the volume of precipitations on the territory of Moldova reached only a half of the normal rate. The last three months were the most arid, the volume of precipitations being under 50%. According to State Meteorological Service Director Valeriu Cazac, the drought which affected 80% of country’s territory is due to the low humidity in the soil, as well as to the extremely high temperatures. The average temperature of the air constituted 21-23 degrees in May-June, by 3-4% more. “The seriousness of the drought can be compared with that occurred in 1946, when the volume of precipitations constituted a half of the multiyear standard, and the average air temperature was by 2-3 degrees higher”, the quoted source mentioned. The specialists say that the situation will worsen if the drought will continue next year too. The danger consists in the fact that the phenomenon might have a biannual cycle. Already now, the ponds, lakes and rivers of Moldova are close to an ecologic crisis, fact which makes harder the irrigation of the fields. According to the experts, insignificant precipitations are expected at the end of July, but this fact will not change the situations occurred in agriculture. The raions less affected by the drought are Briceni, Ocnita, Edinet and Donduseni.
