A man aged 48 from Gotesti village of Cantemir district is suspected of fatally striking a pedestrian on the R-34 road by his car and of leaving the place. He was put under arrest at the Cahul Police Inspectorate for 72 hours, IPN has learned from the National Patrolling Inspectorate.
The body of the victim was found on the side of the road near Cucoara and Zarnesti villages on February 20. He was a resident of Larga Noua, Cahul, aged 40.
Sergiu Costandache, of the Cahul Police Inspectorate, has told IPN that they established the pedestrian was moving legally. He was hit frontally. His body was discovered in a ditch in about 12 hours of the collision.
The driver was arrested on February 25. For hit-and-run only, he faces a fine of 4,000 to 10,000 lei, 200 to 240 hours of community service or up to two years behind bars.
