The driver who caused a traffic accident in Piatra village of Orhei district that resulted in the death of three persons and injuring of a minor aged 14 is held in the remand prison of the Orhei Police Inspectorate. The Inspectorate’s press officer Elena Băetrău has told IPN that he was initially arrested for 72 hours and a warrant for his arrest is to be asked.
A criminal case was started based on Article 264, par. 6 of the Penal Code – violation of the road traffic rules or of the rules of using motor vehicles and causing of the death of two or more persons while under the influence of alcohol as a result. The violation carries a penalty of 7 to 12 years in jail and ban on driving.
Three women died and a teenage boy was seriously hurt when a car driven by an inebriated man hit all of them in Piatra at 11:18pm on July 18. The 30-year-old driver was travelling on the main street of the village towards the municipality of Orhei. He tried to overtake a car moving in front of him. He mounted the curb and struck four of the six pedestrians walking by. It was later established that the man was under the influence of alcohol and had a concentration of 1.33 mg/l of alcohol in the exhaled air.
As a result of the impact, two women aged 49 and 60 died on the spot. A woman aged 21 and a 14-year-old boy were rushed to the hospital in a serious state. The young woman didn’t make it.
