A number of companies from the U.S. expressed their readiness to invest US$2 million in the project to replace the disinfectant for treating the drinking water in Chisinau. The intentions were made public during a fact-finding visit to the Wastewater Treatment Station in Chisinau. Apa-Canal Chisinau director Constantin Becciev has told Info-Prim Neo that the gaseous chlorine is to be replaced with sodium hypochlorite. The value of the project is about US$4 million. “The U.S. companies may invest money in the automation of the technological water disinfection process, while the Moldovan side will provide money for purchasing the disinfection equipment and for the manual labor,” Constantin Becciev said. According to him, the exact costs of the project will be determined soon. The project will be implemented during a year and a half. Constantin Becciev said the current disinfectant has an unpleasant smell and turned out to be carcinogenic. Besides, its transportation is hazardous. “The chlorine is transported in special containers, but in case of an accident, the danger is as great as in the case of a bomb explosion,” he stated. The company Apa-Canal Chisinau provides water supply and sewer services in 30 settlements of Chisinau municipality.
