Raising wages, reducing the number of students in a class and giving dwelling space to young specialists are some of the topics dominating the discussions among the Chisinau City Hall, the Education Ministry, teachers, schoolmasters and parents. They gathered for the annual municipal conference of teachers on Thursday, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The education institutions have multiple and diverse problems,” said Chisinau's Education Direction chief Tatiana Nagnibeda-Tverdohleb, adding the pupils' results are better and better every year, despite the hardships. Counting the totals of the 2007-2008 studying year, Tverdohleb has remarked that there are 10,955 teachers with different didactic degrees in Chisinau. Only one pupil did not attend the school, as 5 children left it — the record-low index, and of 352 students representing Chisinau at international subject Olympiads, 44 returned with medals. The last study year, only 14 got medals. She says they managed to establish cooperation with counterparts from Bucharest and Bihor (Romania), as well as with other education managing bodies from other countries. The food allocations per child rose up to 5 lei a day. Some teachers have been concerned with the multitude of subjects studied, especially in high schools. They think this may lead to stagnation in the education system. The vice principal of Spiru Haret lycee, Mariana Jitari, has put up the idea to post education-related billboards in Chisinau, hoping thus to raise the students' appetite to learn. In addition she has asked “to censor TV programs with anti-educational deviations.”
