The 2024 referendum proposed by President Maia Sandu should also include the subject of Moldova’s Union with Romania, said the chairman of the Moldovan National Party (PNM) Dragoș Galbur. According to him, the results of a referendum favorable to the Union would represent the legal basis for initiating the process of uniting the two Romanian states, IPN notes.
The PNM leader noted that in the context of the Russian military aggression against Ukraine, the Union of the Republic of Moldova with Romania becomes an imperative that would ensure peace and security for the country. In the recent years, the unionist parties were silenced and the subject of European integration, which ensures increased funding from outside, was brought to the forefront.
“We must speed up our European path by uniting with Romania. We must not get drunk on cold water and believe that the Russians will not come after us. They will come after us. And if we do not understand this, we should enter NATO and the EU by uniting with Romania. Tomorrow it may be too late. Over the past three-four years, unionism in the Republic of Moldova at political level has faded away. Only we, the Moldovan National Party, and a few small parties that still plead for the Union with Romania remained. As to the rest, the pro-European topic is fashionable because it opens up good funding for parties and nongovernmental organizations. Unionism is now considered obsolete. The ruling party has annihilated unionism and this topic is on nowhere on the table anymore. But the subject of Union with Romania must be more topical than ever,” Dragoș Galbur stated in the program “Reflection Points” on Vocea Basarabiei channel.
He said the idea of uniting Moldova with Romania should be consulted with citizens in a nationwide referendum. President Maia Sandu’s initiative to organize a plebiscite in 2024 can also be used to determine whether citizens want the Union with Romania or not.
“Recently, President Maia Sandu asked Parliament to organize a referendum. What if, in this referendum, we also have the question: Are you for joining the European Union and NATO through the union with Romania? We would have a clear picture as to how many citizens of the Republic of Moldova support this ideal. We must see if we should insist on this desideratum of the Union with Romania or this referendum will bring to an end everything that the Union with Romania means. The positive result of a referendum on the Union would allow us to have a legal framework to follow the Union path,” stated the chairman of the Moldovan National Party.
Recently, President Maia Sandu requested that Parliament should initiate the organization of a referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union. Also, Maia Sandu announced her intention to run for a new term as President.
