Draft final declaration of European Council confirms candidate status of Moldova

The draft final declaration of the June 23-24 summit of the European Council suggests that Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova should be granted the EU candidate status, IPN reports, quoiting RFE/RL.

The document seen by RFE/RL says that “the European Council decided to grant the candidate status to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova”, noting that Georgia will be granted this status after Tbilisi fulfills a number of conditions.

“The future of these countries and of their citizens is in the European Union,” runs the draft statement dating from June 21.

The European Commission recommended granting the EU candidate status to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, but a final decision is to be taken by the heads of state and government of the EU member states by a unanimous vote.
