DPI says statements made by “Genavavita” chairman are unacceptable

The Department of Penitentiary Institutions (DPI) describes as unacceptable the statements made by Vitalie Czine, chairman of the public organization “Genavavita”, about the alleged threats against detainee Alexandru Raileanu, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Department said that in the morning of April 2, following a judgment passed by the Briceni Court, detainee Alexandru Raileanu was transferred to the Balti Penitentiary. While being transported, this mutilated himself, causing superficial injuries to himself, for the reason that he didn’t want to be transferred to Balti. He was provided medical assistance immediately.

The administration of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions said that to avoid a more serious incident, the employees used special means and informed the people’s ombudsperson and the prosecution bodies about this.  At Penitentiary No. 11 of Balti, the detainee was placed in a cell that meets the detention standards.

In a news conference at IPN on April 10, the chairman of “Genavavita” presented audio recordings where detainee Alexandru Raileanu tells his wife that he was beaten. He said that Raileanu’s wife is also being intimidated and this is done by order of the chief of the Lipcani Penitentiary who is trying to this way punish the detainee for revealing a number of illegalities committed at this prison.
