Dozens of volunteers involved in walking tour of Moldova

Dozens of Peace Corps volunteers and their colleagues from Moldova are staging a walking tour of Moldova on the occasion of the Peace Corps’ 20th anniversary in Moldova. U.S. Ambassador WilliamMoser joined the walkers in Hancesti district, covering with them a distance of about 4 km between the villages Solticeni and Bobeica. The diplomat visited the general school in Bobeica and was invited to a meal with traditional Moldovan dishes prepared by volunteers, IPN reports.

The ambassador said that volunteering must be supported. The Peace Corps volunteers work in the rural schools of Moldova, engaging the teachers and students in volunteer work. Another important thing, according to the ambassador, is the culture exchange because the Americans learn the Romanian language and culture, while the Moldovans learn the language and culture of the U.S.

“I want to thank the Peace Corps volunteers for organizing this event. The host families are one of the keys of the success of the Peace Corpse program in Moldova. I want to thank you for playing host to the American young people. It is wonderful to celebrate the 20 years of work this way,” said the ambassador.

AnaRoman, the host who invited the ambassador, said it is the third year that she hosts American young people. “It’s my pleasure to play host to them as they are very good. They like it here because the food is healthy and it is quiet,” she stated.

Volunteer from the U.S. Brad teaches at the lyceum in Lapusna, Hancesti. He said that by this program he travels a lot, gets acquainted with many people and discuss with them and develops his knowledge. He is proud that he learned to be as communicative as the Moldovans and to say ‘good day’ to everyone. Ivette, who came from California, said there are many people in Moldova who want and are ready to help.

The Peace Corps started work in Moldova in 1993. More than 800 U.S. volunteers had worked in Moldova since then. On June 15, two teams of Peace Corps volunteers began walking across the country – one from Soroca to Chisinau and another one from Taraclia to Chisinau. In the villages they cross they carry out different volunteer activities. On June 30, the two teams will meet in Chisinau.
