Dozens of candles lit in Parliament’s square in memory of Holocaust victims

MPs, alongside other officials and young people, lit candles in memory of victims of the Holocaust and observed a moment of silence to show solidarity with the sufferings of the past and pledged to keep alive the memory of those who had to endure the horrors of the Holocaust, IPN reports.

“It was a tragedy, but humanity unfortunately does not learn from past tragedies. We must commemorate, talk to children about the fact that these atrocities were committed, refer both to those who committed them and to those who came to help and saved lives, risking their own lives,” said Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu.

Moldova’s Parliament condemned the Holocaust in July 2014, adopting a political declaration to accept the report of the International Commission on the Holocaust. The political declaration condemns any attempts to ignore and deny the Holocaust and pays tribute to its victims and survivors of the Holocaust.

The International Holocaust Remembrance Day is celebrated each year on January 27. This day was designated by a United Nations General Assembly Resolution adopted in 2005. In Moldova, the National Holocaust Remembrance Day has been marked since 2015, according to a decision adopted by Parliament.
