Dorin Recean visited only living World War II veteran from Sângerei

Prime Minister Dorin Recean visited the only living World War II veteran from Sângerei district. The veteran from Grigorăuca village, Alexei Yeremchuk, celebrated his hundredth birthday in March and has eleven great-grandchildren. The head of government said that the veteran is an example both for his family and for many people in the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.

The Prime Minister noted that Alexei Yeremchuk went to the front “to fight Nazism and bring peace to the world”. He returned home to Grigorăuca long after the end of the war, in 1946. “Our veterans still remember the horrors of war and the pain caused by it. Our duty is to keep the peace for which our grandparents and great-grandparents fought and to ensure a better future for the future generations,” said Dorin Recean.

The head of government noted that the Day of Victory against Nazism and of commemoration of the heroes fallen in World War II is an opportunity to honor the courage and sacrifice of veterans, but also a moment to talk about peace and the horrors of any war.

There are 37 living World War II veterans in the Republic of Moldova at present.
