The drivers who commit violations in traffic with cars with foreign and Transnistrian license plates will be identified and held accountable starting with next year. The announcement was made by Minister of the Interior Dorin Recean in the program “Fourth power” on N4 TV channel, IPN reports.
Recean said a special program is now being tested. “The idea is to immediately certify the violations involving cars with foreign license plates identified by surveillance cameras. The information will be transmitted fast to the closest police team, which will stop the given car and will write a report,” he stated.
The minister noted that the surveillance cameras now monitor traffic in 70 intersections. Until 2016, their number all over the country will be increased to 2,600. “The number of road accidents decreased considerably in Chisinau after surveillance cameras were installed. This way the traffic participants are educated to obey the law,” he said.
Dorin Recean also said that the fines for traffic violations must be increased. “The current fines do not scare the drivers much. For some they are trivial. To make the motorists disciplined, these fines should be increased. But we will do this after the salaries of police officers are raised. There is a risk that the rise in fines will lead to an increase in the number of acts of corruption among patrolling inspectors,” he stated.
According to the statistics presented by the minister, approximately 1,400 complaints about acts of corruption involving police officers are submitted annually to the Ministry of the Interior.
